Michael from Zambia To Mali
Where did Michael’s journey with us begin?
Michael had found out through our underground network that we were sourcing Maintenance Superintendents and Maintenance Supervisors for a company in Mali that had large fleets of equipment spread over multiple sites, and which had a large rental division.
We reviewed Michael’s CV and had a chat with him, he had a lot of experience on Cat gear, and drills and drifters. And he was looking for an expat FIFO role somewhere in Africa, and we felt he was a good fit for the Mali company and that they should have a discussion with him.
We set up interviews for Michael and he presented well to the Mali Mining and Drilling Company.
A FIFO Job Offer From A Mining and Drilling Company In Mali, West Africa.
A few days after the interview, Michael was offered a role as their maintenance supervisor. And Michael’s FIFO life began, he was quickly deployed to Mali, where he was given a baptism of fire. The local workforce spoke predominantly French and Michael faced some serious challenges with the delivery of parts in the very remote sites.
But Michael really impressed the Mali Mining and Drilling company. He was soon supervising the repair and maintenance of Epiroc T35 and T40, Shram, Dpi1500 Sandvik and a range of Cat gear including loaders and dump trucks.
Michael ended up being asked to extend his contract multiple times, and he really helped with the training up of the local workforce and encouraging them to better understand the importance of contamination control, and its correlation with less breakdowns and extended machine life.
The Expat FIFO Life
Michael by now was well and truly hooked on FIFO life in Africa. He was working on good rosters, and really enjoying helping to upskill and mentor people with less experience than he has. He’s made some great connections and some good friends through his Expat roles.
FIFO Burkina Faso
Recently Michael has been working as an Expat on a FIFO contract in Burkina Faso, again as a Maintenance Supervisor, overseeing the asset management of various fleets of equipment.
Feedback from Michael
Michael asked us to share his workers journey after he saw his previous co-worker Patrick’s journey documented on our website.
He said that his life changed in many ways after being selected by Skilled Migration Group Limited, he said he was very surprised when he first worked with Skilled Migration Group, that he was not required to pay any fees or costs – he said in Zambia it’s very common that recruitment agencies charge a registration fee, and even when you pay the large fee to register with the Zambian agencies, there is no certainty of getting a job.
Michael confirmed that he has never paid a fee or any costs, for any role that Skilled Migration Group has placed him into. Michael is very well known in Zambia and throughout Africa and he wanted his fellow Zambians to know that they do not need to pay a fee to get a job.
Michael also said that he wanted to thank Epiroc Zambia, First Quantum Minerals, Barloworld, and Barrick Gold at Lumwana, he said he was very fairly treated by these companies and that he gained a lot of experience working at them.
Recently Michael completed an upgrade course on Caterpillar Software ET and SIS 2.0 and we think Michael is going to continue on with what is shaping up to be a great career.
