482 to 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream
The 482 to 186 TRT stream is for subclass 457 and subclass 482 visa holders who, while holding that visa, worked in the position nominated by their employer for a total period of a least two years out of the three years immediately before making their nomination application, and their employer wants to offer them a permanent position.
The subclass 186 visa is a permanent residency visa for Australia.
What can you do when you have this visa:
This is an Australian permanent residency visa.
- You can live, work and study in Australia indefinitely.
- You can sponsor eligible family members to come to Australia.
- If eligible, apply for Australian Citizenship.
Who is eligible for this visa:
Some of the eligibility criteria are listed below, there may be additional criteria that apply in some applications, your Migration Agent (Offshore) will advise you as required.
You must have been employed in eligible sponsored employment for a total of 2 years in the 3 years prior to the date you apply for your visa.
Eligible sponsored employment must be:
- full-time.
- undertaken in Australia.
- undertaken while holding a subclass 457,482 or eligible bridging visa.
- undertaken in an occupation you were granted a subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa to perform.
You must be nominated by your Australian employer whose business is actively and lawfully operating in Australia.
You must be under 45 years of age at the time of application (exemptions can apply in very limited cases).
You must meet English language requirements at the time of the application.
You must currently be the primary visa holder of either a:
- subclass 457 visa (any stream).
- subclass 482 visa (any stream).
- Bridging visa associated with a subclass 457, 482, 186 or 187 application, if your last substantive visa was a subclass 457 or 482.
You must satisfy the health requirements.
You must satisfy the character requirements.
If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet and
- sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws
If you owe the Australian Government money, you must have paid it back or have a formal arrangement to pay it back.
The Australian Department of Immigration will consider your immigration history when making a decision on your application, which means you might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused.
Members of the Family Unit are eligible to make combined applications.
Member of the Family Unit:
‘Member of the Family Unit’ as a general rule is a defined term under the Migration Regulations 1994 (Cth).[1]
A person is a member of the family unit of another person (the family head) if the person:
(a) is a spouse or de facto partner of the family head; or
(b) is a child or step‑child of the family head or of a spouse or de facto partner of the family head (other than a child or step‑child who is engaged to be married or has a spouse or de facto partner) and:
(i) has not turned 18; or
(ii) has turned 18, but has not turned 23, and is dependent on the family head or on the spouse or de facto partner of the family head; or
(iii) has turned 23 and is dependent on the family head or on the spouse or de facto partner of the family head; or
(c) is a dependent child of a person who meets the conditions in paragraph (b) .

Home Affairs Visa Application Charges:
- The Base Application Charge is AUD $4910
- For each additional applicant that is aged 18 and over the charge is AUD $2455
- For each additional applicant that is aged under 18 the charge is AUD $1230
