Reuben, Spray Painter – Zambia to Australia
Where did Reuben’s journey with us begin?
Reuben told us he started following Skilled Migration back in 2019. He felt he would never get the chance to go to Australia, but he enjoyed seeing others get their chance and get deployed — he was always genuinely happy for the people who got to go.
His interest grew as he watched the photos and articles Dennis posted about Skilled Migration Group and the way the team works.
Then, in 2023, one of Reuben’s friends called him: Skilled Migration Group had a search on for sand blasters and spray painters. His friend gave him the online application address, and Reuben applied.
After supplying documents so we could check whether a visa was possible, Reuben was asked to pick a date for an interview in Lusaka with Dennis and the interview team. He told us later he was so nervous he was not himself — but we still had a great chat. Reuben is always laughing and smiling; he is certainly not one to drag the feeling down. Every day alive is a good day with Reuben.
A side note: Reuben still regularly checks in on Dennis. Asks how he is. Tells him “make sure you take it easy boss, you have a lot more people to help yet.” Seriously, Reuben — you are a genuine, decent man. Thank you.
A job offer from an Australian company
A few weeks after the preliminary interview, we arranged for Reuben to meet representatives from an Australian company — again in Lusaka.
It was a flexible, friendly chat: about life, about work, about quality control and painting techniques. Reuben had brought photos of the equipment he used, and everyone just listened as he explained how he was trained, how he performs his work safely and to procedure, and how he preps and cleans his equipment.
Reuben demonstrated that he really knows his trade.
And Reuben was offered a role with an Australian employer of choice — the market leader in their field.
We meet again
The team worked with Reuben to prepare for Australia. His wife was about to give birth to their second child, and things were complicated. But Reuben just kept smiling and laughing — and still kept checking up on Dennis: “hey boss, we haven’t spoken for a couple of weeks. How you been? You looking after yourself?”
Reuben, you are amazing. Simply amazing.
Pack your bags mate, you’re going to Australia!
Australia — the lucky country.
Reuben deployed to Australia on 19 March 2023, and he hit the ground running from day one.
What’s it like living and working in Australia?
Reuben has fitted into Australia very well. He likes Australia, and it likes Reuben. His employer ran an excellent onboarding program, with ongoing training and inductions. Capacity has grown at the company, and Reuben is a very proud member of their workforce.
He asked us to say that he is very grateful to his Australian employer for taking a chance on him — and that he will not let them down.
Feedback from Reuben
Reuben said that when he first met Dennis, Dennis shook his hand and told him: “Remember this day Reuben, because this day will change your life. I will get you a job in Australia.”
Reuben thought it was a joke. He doesn’t think it’s a joke now. He is living and working in Australia — a dream he thought would never come to someone like him — and soon his family will join him, and everything will be complete.
Reuben wanted to thank the people he worked with at Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, in the North-Western Province of Zambia. He has happy memories of the paint shop and his workmates. He wanted to thank the team at Skilled Migration who helped when things were tough: he said we made things seem easier, straightened things out when they seemed difficult, and always treated him well.
On Australia: he has started a new life, and the people he is meeting are nice, respectful, friendly and peaceful. Thank you, Australia. He and his co-workers push hard for their Australian employer every day, and they do it with smiles on their faces.
Reuben confirmed that he never paid any fees or costs for anything to do with his recruitment, visa or deployment. He has no loans to repay. In Zambia, he said, it is very common for workers to pay fees — but he paid nothing.
