Dault, Heavy Equipment Repair Technician – Zambia to Australia

Where did Dault’s journey with us begin?

Dault’s worker’s journey is the story of a dream: a dream of a job in Australia. The dream eventually became reality in 2023 — but it began all the way back in 2012, when Dault first learned that Skilled Migration Group was recruiting in Africa for Australian Caterpillar dealers and for Komatsu Australia.

So close, but no cigar!

Dault’s second attempt at being hired by an Australian company came in late 2019 — just before the pandemic hit the globe. This time Dault had made it. And then COVID-19 border and movement restrictions brought everything to a standstill. The world’s health came first, so many loved ones were lost, and everything that had been within reach was suddenly water under the bridge. The Australian dream seemed, finally, to fade away.

Learned the trade in Zambia, trained by Liebherr in the USA

Dault gained his trade certification in 2000. After graduating he worked on drills, then joined Atlas Copco working on Boomers and dump trucks, before joining First Quantum Minerals in 2006 — where he clocked up more than fifteen years of service. He has nothing but good things to say about his time at FQM, his old co-workers and his bosses.

Then, in 2022, something came up. Dault’s journey took a different path: he was sent to the United States for training at the Liebherr factory in Virginia. And that relit everything. Boom — the dream was back, and with it the hunger to create a better life for his family by relocating to Australia.

We meet again

When Dault heard that Dennis and the team were coming to Lusaka again, he decided to give it one more attempt. It was November 2022, and Dault was mindful of the situation — he was concerned about his age.

Age did not shatter the dream, and Dault soon found out that age is not a barrier with Skilled Migration Group. He met Dennis and Brent in Lusaka for two technical interviews, which were very fruitful. After the second one, Dennis said to Dault: “Welcome to Australia, mate! You are going to get hired!”

And Dault said: “For sure he meant what he said, as Dennis always is a man of his words. Thumbs up, Dennis.”

Pack your bags mate, you’re going to Australia!

Australia — the lucky country. Dault was interviewed by a representative of an Australian employer of choice, presented his case very well, and was offered a role with an exceptionally good Australian company. The deployment process took centre stage, and in no time Dault found himself in Australia.

What’s it like living and working in Australia?

The journey has not been easy. Being new in a new place, learning a different culture altogether, was a mixed-up turn of events — homesickness crept in, and missing family and friends. It is not an easy journey. You have to make sacrifices and look at the end goal: creating a new, better life for our families. Creating generational change.

Dault made new friends at work and socially, and he says he works hard so that in the future his family — his children, and his grandchildren — can benefit from his work.

Feedback from Dault

Dault had this to say: “My journey might seem hard, but others have had a more difficult journey. My wish is that by telling the story of my journey, it might encourage someone who might be in despair — to demonstrate that dreams are possible to achieve, and that with dedication and hard work, that person may continue with their pursuit to make their dream a reality.”

Dault wanted it stated that he never paid any fees or costs for his recruitment, visa, medicals, travel or deployment — his Australian employer paid for everything — and that he will be forever grateful, not only for that, but for the chance at a better life his Australian employer offered him and his family.

That was Dault, a heavy equipment repair technician from Zambia, and his worker’s journey. We are Skilled Migration Group, and we tip our hat to you, Dault: a gentleman, an exceptional tradesperson, and a loyal man of your word. You are pure quality.

Quality never goes out of style.
