Achievement Title
Cut down on the machine downtime at customer working site
Date of Achievement
21 November 2025
Details of Achievement
D8 Dozer powered by C15 ENGINE.
customer complaint: Electrical faults and warning alarm during operation.
presents diagnostic codes 41-4 8volts supply & E232[1] WIF high.
previous technicians already replaced the WIF Sensor but that did not clear the codes.
findings and troubleshooting steps.
-hooked my ET laptop & downloaded PSR for records per Caterpillar policy.
-checked for engine system parameters especially for sensors powered by 8volts supply with the help of schematic diagrams.
-by using ET laptop i noticed coolant level sensor & engine oil level sensor was also affected because of these 2 error codes and so my next step was to test for 8volts supply at each these 3 sensor, WIF SENSOR, COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR & ENGINE OIL LEVEL SENSOR and found on each 3volts out of range.
-At this point i suspected one of the sensor to short internally so i used the elimination test method by isolating the sensors one by one while checking if the code changes or cleared. after i isolated all 3 sensors nothing changed, codes still there, sensors are good.
-next step was now to check Engine ECM 8volts supply on J1 ECM connector pin 4. found zero volts present. before i suspected the ECM i wanted to be sure so i removed pin 4 wire from ECM J1 connector by using the pin removal tool and test for 8volts supply direct on ECM pin 4 without disconnecting the J1 connector by doing so 8volts ECM supply was present and my ECM was good. this test confirmed a short circuit in the 8volts supplied circuits wiring harness.
-now i had to go back to the wiring diagram, now for this machine the fan motor speed directional sensor is not equipped, so at the beginning it was ignored that part but now i need to check all circuits including this one and that was where short was coming from.
-when inspecting the fan motor speed directional sensor harness, i found all cables were exposed and shorted to fan motor solenoid harness. i repaired the harness for both circuits and secured them accordingly.
-performed ECM J1 connector pin4 8volts supply tested 8volts presents & all sensors 8volts supply was restored. test machine and all code were cleared. operation was restored and equipment was available.
