During my three-year apprenticeship in Heavy Equipment Repair at Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd Nchanga Trades School Chingola, I gained hands-on experience in the maintenance, diagnostics, and overhaul of heavy mining machinery and earthmoving equipment. I spent significant time across key sections, including the main 18 Shaft Surface Diesel workshops, engine overhaul bay, Transmission / Final Drives Bay, Hydraulics and Air Components, Rebuilds and field maintenance units. Through this rotation, I developed strong technical skills in troubleshooting of Diesel engines, hydraulic systems, repairing powertrain components, and performing routine preventive maintenance to ensure optimal equipment uptime. The program was structured 3 months in school and 3 months in plant on live production equipment under skilled trainer tradesmen. Built a robust technical foundation in trouble shooting diesel engines, Hydraulic and air systems, Auto electrics and Power Components repair and Executing routine Preventive Maintenance for maximum equipment performance and reliability. The 3 year apprenticeship was three months in school and three months in plant under the close supervision of selected experienced , knowledgeable and skilled artisans, technicians, technologists and engineers and the Skills Training Coordinator [these were sent for specialist training in Australia - Hawthorn under the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd World Bank Artisan Training Project and it paid by supplying ready for work artisans even before full qualification because we were trained on live production machines with the sense of urgency required in production operations. We learnt safety and environmental issues at an early stage and i have since kept it intact, safety is non negotiable. I follow the safe mining protocols and other safety programs as applicable to each site and company, 5S, Safe Mining, etc.
