How big are Caterpillar Dump Trucks?
I’ve been sourcing, chatting with, and interviewing Caterpillar Field Service Technicians and Caterpillar Dealer Trained Staff around the world for a long time.
And for a long time whenever I was in the UK recruiting Caterpillar Field Service Engineers (yep, all around the world, they are called by a different title, but it’s the same gravy). UK Field service fitters, field service mechanics, field service technicians, regardless what they prefer to be called, used to have limited exposure to the larger Caterpillar dump trucks.
And I was forever being asked for photos of the “big Cat gear”, and can you tell us how big the gear is etc. And I’m not sure what I’m getting into etc.
It’s easy today, everyone just uses their phone and youtube or social media and there are videos and photos of every bit of Caterpillar Gear there is, everyone and anyone can access it and view it. But back then it was unheard of to have videos on your phone or easy access to photos, and many people simply didn’t know how big the surface mining machines were.
So this is how I used to demonstrate in three easy steps to field service fitters in the UK and Europe just how big Caterpillar Dump trucks in Australia, Canada, South America and other places around the world can be.
Step 1.
I asked them if they have ever seen a BIG truck like a Cat 777, and if they said yes, then I’d bring a scale model of a Cat 777D out of my case and put it on the table, and I’d say, pretty big huh?
Step 2.
Then I’d ask have you worked on bigger Caterpillar trucks than that, some have said yes, maybe a Caterpillar 789D, and I’d say, that’s not bad and I’d bring out a scale model of a Cat 793D and I’d sit the Cat 777D in the tray of the Cat 793D.
Step 3.
Then I’d ask if they knew of anything bigger and usually they’d heard of bigger trucks, but never seen them. And then I’d bring out a scale model of a Cat 797F and I’d sit the other two dump trucks in the tray of the Cat 797F.
Telling is not selling – seeing is believing.
Did I mention I had a different approach than most.
Enjoy your day – Think big
